Visitors have been coming to the Skrang and Lemanak for more than20 years, although the sheer number of longhouses in the areameans that it is not overrun with tourists. In fact, this familiaritywith outsiders has its advantages; locals generally speak goodEnglish and are able to explain their culture and lifestyle tovisitors without difficulty.
All trips to longhouses involve a river journey in a dugoutcanoe, along riverbanks lined with well-kept pepper gardens, punctuatedwith the occasional giant rainforest tree. Accommodation usuallyinvolves bedding down on the longhouse verandah (albeit on comfortablemattresses under mosquito nets), but many travel agents also runtheir own guesthouses.
