MIRI AND NORTHEAST SARAWAK

Miri is a bustling oil town and commercial centre, and the majorentry point for Northeast Sarawak. This area is home to many ofthe state's most interesting attractions, offering the adventuroustraveller some of the most fascinating sights in Sarawak. Miriis connected by air and road to all of Sarawak's major towns,and is half a day's drive or a 40-minute flight from Brunei. Otherair links include Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu. The town hasa wide range of accommodation catering to luxury and budget travellers,some decent beaches nearby, and dozens of good restaurants, pubsand bars.

Whilst the town itself is a pleasant place to spend a few daysrecovering from the rigours of jungle trekking, the real reasonfor coming here is to visit Miri's vast hinterland. The town servesas a jumping-off point for a number of national parks,including Gunung Mulu with its world-famous cave system, the archaeologicallyimportant Niah Caves, and the lesser-known but equally interestingLambir Hills. As well as the national parks, there are countlessopportunities for longhouse visits to the Orang Ulu andIban communities living along the Baram river and its tributaries.Miri is also the gateway for Bario and the Kelabit Highlands,a beautiful mountain valley with superb jungle treks and welcomingKelabit longhouses.
